My tween wanted a chicken cake for her 12th birthday. I’ve never made a chicken cake before, but I love cutting and icing shapes so I faced the task like a happy hen.

Cutting a chicken out of a 9 x 12 cake isn’t as easy as it sounds… I TRIED to do chicken legs and feet but that just wasn’t happening so I had to improvise.

So I cut some eggs out of the leftover cake.

I iced them up.

Then it was time to color the chicken. Unfortunately I was out of red dye (and not running to the store yet again, so I used purpose and figured I could cover the comb and waddle with some red sprinkles later.
Feathering the chicken went okay.

I even got the wing going.

Once the feathers were done, the red sprinkles really did bring things together.

And candy eyes are my daughter’s favorite. She’s always asking to just snack on them and I have to hide them from her.

Add eggs, a nest (out of just crumpled up cake crumbs), and our chicken was ready to party!
There’s nothing like being a mom. It’s so much fun doing all the little things for the little ones. Especially cake art!!
