Every year I have at least one kid who wants a costume that makes me go: How can I do this?
It’s challenging. But also super fun trying to figure everything out.
This year, my eldest boy decided he wants to be a scorpion. So I got the last yard of black felt fabric from the craft store. We got a matching black hoodie and pants set from the thrift store, and I set to work.
The tail was the biggest challenge, but it was like making a giant pillow. I’m not a pattern person, so i just cut it freely and had fun.
Once I stuffed the tail my son said it was like a pillow and carried it around for a while.
Then I attached it to the hoodie.
I kept wondering “How in the world am I going to make claws?”
But my son thought that up so fast. He said, “We can use oven mitts!” (He loves stealing my oven mitts while we’re baking, so we went out and got him his own little black set and they’re the cutest little claws. Best of all he can use them when we bake now, and he won’t have to steal mine anymore.)

You gotta love those clever little scorpions haha
