Cancel me once, shame on you, cancel me twice, and I’ll come back anew?
…Or something like that. haha
Cancel culture is so boring and useless that it’s actually helped me find fresh new writers with thought-provoking ideas. The more extremists attempt to cancel people, the more I wish to learn about them. It was the cancel culture attack on conservative literary agent Colleen Oefelein (a veteran who volunteered with kindergartners) that pushed me into journalism.
Before that, I was happy writing modern fairy tales and attempting to create space operas. But 2020 was a breaking point, and when 2021 came in with a big bang I had to change my tune. I could no longer sit quietly. I could no longer allow censorship and ignorance to dominate a field that should be based on freedom of information.
So I started writing articles and I’ve been doing it pretty much nonstop for the past 3 years.
I was recently asked by my Write Revolution News editor Summer Lane to comment on the new Book Tok cancel lists, aka: Red Lists. I don’t really do TikTok but these movements only hurt themselves. They’re dishing out free publicity for conservative authors and it’s hilarious.
I was happy to offer my point of view after laughing my guts out. I mean, I’ve been working in professional publishing for 13 years now, yet I’ve never had an agent and I’m not a mainstream shill.
It’s a beautiful thing really. I thank my lucky stars every day, but really I owe it all to you guys. My readers. Because you are why I keep writing and getting published.
And I encourage all of you to find a compelling book on one of these “red lists” and give a canceled author a chance. It may just rock your world.
