Op-Ed: Local and state governments honor Charlie Kirk ahead of Oct. 14 remembrance day

Oct. 14, 2025, will be a National Day of Remembrance in honor of Charlie Kirk’s life and legacy. Multiple local and state governments are honoring him in their own ways, but we need a permanent annual holiday on Oct. 14, honoring free speech and the man who worked so hard to deliver it to young Americans.

The assassination of Charlie Kirk is still hanging over a lot of us.

I’ve never had writer’s block, but I have been having to force myself to write. It’s not necessarily about Charlie Kirk himself, either. I supported his work and wrote about his events and content for years, but I didn’t personally know him; it’s more about the attack on freedom of speech that really hits hard.

The people who argue against honoring Kirk all say the same thing: they didn’t like what he had to say, so he shouldn’t be remembered. They completely miss the gravity of the situation and, sadly, perpetuate the further diminution of our right to speak freely.
