Revisions

Just because I can’t sit still, I’m working on editing the first two novels I wrote while I wait for two new book releases and all the joys of formatting and such. Going back through old work is like wandering through a nursing home trying to find youth. It’s depressing and draining. But if you keep roaming and find your way, you may just find the key to everlasting life. (We writers all wish to be immortal you know. At least through our words)

When working on my own writing (especially editing), I like to have at least two projects to alternate between. The more the better. It’s how my brain works. I get a little ahead and then switch when I get frustrated. Gives me time to cool down and come back later.

Last night I got so frustrated with my Sword and Sorcery novel (the 2nd novel I wrote) that I was ready to throw my computer at the wall.

No worries, I didn’t. Because I knew it was time to swallow my anger and go dig up my first novel. The fairy tale retelling that I wrote before I actually knew what the hell I was doing. (Not that I do now, but I have a better handle on the insanity of trying to be a successful word smith)

I hate the word rewrite. It indicates that you slash all your old work and create something entirely new. Or at least that’s what I envision. But Revising, that is a concept, a word that has become my new best friend. I’m only a couple of pages into revising the first novel I wrote and I am feeling inspired. Something of the old love has rekindled. She has heart. The base story is good. Going through and rewording, reworking, and cleaning out the shows for the tells is amazing.

This was a novel that I had given up on. I considered her dead and buried. I cried over the decision. It was like losing a child. To reanimate her is one of the oddest, most rewarding feelings I’ve ever experienced.

THERE IS LIFE AFTER DEATH! haha

Of course the true test will be testing her out with publishers and readers (as always). But I have an insanely good feeling about this and I’m not usually off.

So if you’re struggling through some writing or editing, just remember you can always go back and smooth things out. Well, as long as you’re still breathing. haha
