Every time I write about Afghanistan my heart is just shattered. Yet knowing all of the harmful measures public schools are taking in the US I can’t help but wonder if there’s an entire side to this we are not seeing.

I’m a firm believer that a well-rounded education improves the lives of children and societies, but my family was forced to homeschool in order to provide our kids with the best education possible. Home education and private tutoring is still legal for Afghani girls, as is educational instruction based on religious teachings. Now, I’m not going to give the Taliban a pass here, but there are some members who are open to expanding education for all children and that gives me hope.

Maybe I’m being naive, but I really do wonder how this will play out.
