This industry isn’t easy. It’s a constant struggle. You have to polish and promote like crazy if you want to get your story out.
Having a publisher to back you helps, but at the end of the day it is up to the author to make sure that what they create finds an audience. Reaching out to people and booking events is where you get the most love (and sales).
I had a book signing with my illustrator at my favorite local book store Night before last and I have a full tour to follow up with. Online sales help keep royalties going, but it is the in-person appearances where I get the most sales (and the most love).
Reviews help give readers and idea of what to expect. Having 8 5 star reviews already, makes me feel as if I’m doing something right. You cannot base your career on reviews but they sure do help. Watching sales climb and fall like a heartbeat is torture, but it’s part of the job.
I don’t write for myself. If I did I would just keep a journal. Writing & publishing is about sharing the art of words. It helps me to better experience the human connection and exchange thoughts. (Yes exchange-I do my best to respond to every message and post from my readers.)
This week has had so much promise and a nice sprinkling of setbacks to make sure that I don’t float away.
Getting into the top 50 in our genre made it very difficult to keep from jumping around like a Labrador retriever surrounded by tennis balls.
I plan to keep going further and keep listening to you so that you enjoy listening to me. I am always happy to respond to questions and comments, so if you have any, don’t hesitate.
I wish everyone a great holiday weekend.
