I don’t even know what to say

Monday, my husband’s cousin was murdered in front of her 2 and 6 year-old sons. She was going through a divorce and her ex came by. He shot her in the face, called the police and told them what happened, then shot himself.

The children were left with their dead bodies for 15 minutes before police got there. They are with their grandma (my husband’s aunt) right now. I know the economy is garbage and everyone has their own worries, but we’re trying to raise money for the funeral and memorial. Even just a dollar would mean so much to us.

My husband has never experienced this kind of tragedy. He’s lost friends to addiction issues and family to illness, but this is just… rough.

When I was young a middle school friend of mine was killed like this, Reggie. I didn’t know that his step-dad wasn’t his dad (his biological father lived out of state). But his biological dad had been a police officer and was put in jail for not paying all of his child support. I can’t imagine what it’s like to be a cop locked up, but when he got out he came to Missouri killed Reggie’s mother, step father, and then shoved Reggie and his 2 year old baby brother in a car in the garage with the door closed and turned it on. Then he went back in the house and shot himself. The boys both suffocated to death from the exhaust fumes and Reggie was gone.

Situations like this are so hard to handle. They’re true tragedies. It takes a long time to heal from them, and even so, it always remains with you. The “silver lining” in what happened this week is that at least he didn’t kill the kids. But that’s a pretty shitty silver lining. My husband just keeps asking, “How do you even explain what happened to the 6 year old?”

Hopefully the little one is young enough to forget.

But again, the fam is devastated. If you have anything to give — even just prayers — it would be greatly appreciated.
