This week I submitted something I never knew I could write. I’ve had a pretty good time getting some of my fantasy stories published and if you’ve read my blog before, you know that I have a children’s book that is under contract to be released soon. I’m also working on a nonfiction book in addition to the novel I just finished and will be submitting shortly. So I am not one given to stick within any genera, why should I when I have such a wide variety of ideas?
A while ago I came across a romance anthology asking for stories involving hunky Incubui, my mind immediately exploded with ideas and I decided to test the waters. Sure romance is not a genera I’ve been much interested in before but why not? I had previously written a very beautiful story with a love scene between a man and a mermaid and highly enjoyed it even if that wasn’t the crux of the story.
Funny thing is, what started as a way for me to just see if I could write something different turned into something that I’m proud of. Being skeptical at first, I quickly found that this particular vein of writing is extremely liberating and involved. I really became attached to the story line and loved my characters.
Never write off an opportunity. Sure a lot of writers have a specific style and obtain a certain fan base, but if you enjoy your work and want to branch out go for it. There are a lot of creative avenues open for those of us who can’t get enough of world building. Limiting yourself only closes doors.
