I read an article questioning the consequences of considering words “literal weapons.” Not literal as in, figurative, but actual prosecutable violence.
Everywhere I look I see people mistaking words for actions. It’s as if we forgot that old standby, “actions speak louder than words.” If I based my life off of what people say instead of what they do, I’d be dead by now.
It’s a strange paradox for me. As a writer, I believe words hold importance. They can create positive change or negative regression. Words matter.
At the same time, words only effect those who allow them to do so.
We now live in times where being outraged is seen as activism. People too often divide and pick sides on simple statements that have multiple interpretations. I have never and will never advocate outlawing any words because as soon as decent people say goodbye to our freedom of speech to punish the jerks, we lose the right to express all of our feelings, not just the negative ones.
Agree or disagree, read the piece. I’m always up for respectful conversation no matter where a person’s opinions rest.

Interesting post that gave me some things to think about. I think I need to take more action in my life and keep more silent about somethings. Enjoyed reading what you wrote about some people perceiving being offended as activism and reminded me of this: “In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called.” From 1984 by Orwell
