This post really speaks to me. When I was about nineteen years old, I was having serious doubts about being an English major. I couldn’t stomach one more sonnet or one more sentence from a bloated Victorian “classic.” It all seemed contrived and out of touch.
Then a girl in my British lit class gave me a copy of Bukowski’s book of poetry, The Days Run Away Like Wild Horses Over the Hills. It was a game changer for me.
My professors mostly dismissed Bukowski as a drunken buffoon, and that only confirmed my suspicions that there was something honest and beautiful in his work.
